7. Visualizing Your Data: A Deep Dive into Charts
A picture is worth a thousand words. The Chart view in Status Time and Times helps you quickly understand complex data by representing it visually. This chapter will guide you on how to use each chart type effectively.
Bar Charts: Comparing Categories
Bar charts are excellent for comparing values across different categories, such as time spent in each status or by each assignee.
When to Use:
To find the status that takes the most time (bottlenecks).
To compare the workload between different assignees.
To see the number of issues in each status.
Line Charts: Tracking Trends Over Time
Line charts are the best choice for visualizing how data changes over a continuous period.
When to Use:
With the "Average Time" report to evaluate if your team's efficiency is improving over months.
With the "Transition Count" report to track rework trends over time.
Tip: A downward-sloping line in an "Average Time" chart is a great sign of process improvement!
Pie Charts: Showing Proportions
Pie charts are effective tools for showing how a whole is divided into parts. They instantly show the largest and smallest proportions.
When to Use:
With the "Assignee Time" report to see the percentage of total work handled by each person.
With the "Status Count" report to see the proportion of issues in each status.
Caution: Avoid using pie charts with too many categories (more than 5-6), as they can become difficult to read. In this case, a bar chart is usually a better choice.
